I Was Meant to Be a Preacher
Donna McBroom-Theriot preaches as a participant of
"Hearing and Encountering the Word of God,"
a preaching workshop offered to Laity of the Southern Dominican Province in February, 2017
The preaching workshop changed my life in so many ways. When I left home on Friday, I was hoping for a peaceful weekend after a week of turmoil dealing with music ministers. I was also counting the hours until I could return home. You see, I’m an introvert and was feeling quite out of my comfort zone.
What I didn’t expect was the transformation that took place. I left home as a Dominican but returned as an enlightened Dominican Preacher. I did find the peace I was hoping for that weekend. I found it in the Word. The Word spoke to me in ways I had never imagined; it inspired me, it comforted me, it challenged me, it lifted me up, and it taught me lessons.
I laughingly told a couple of Dominican friends that I now feel as though I were meant to be a preacher! The scripture has opened up my soul and there are sermons running around in my head all day long. The Word has become a living being in my life just as God meant it to be. Our elderly priest, bless his heart, ran out of sermons the other day and asked us what the scripture was saying to us. (This was daily mass in the chapel.) Surprise! Words began bubbling from me. I get so excited when I read the Word, as I cannot wait to hear the message God has for me for the day.
I returned from the workshop with the confidence I needed to proclaim the Word instead of merely reading it as well as being able to articulate the message I have received. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make the workshop a success. My life is forever blessed from being there.
